Hello Everyone

Postby jjlhoff » Sat Jul 23, 2011 10:53 am

I'm new to the site and just wanted to get info to make sure I am caring for our fish correctly :) We have a 60 gal tank set up for 5 months with 2 tiger oscars, 3 black convicts, 1 green terror, 2 jack dempsys, 1 pleco and 1 dinosaur eel all fairly small still. Will be getting a larger tank eventually. We have an AquaClear filter 110 series and a sump tank my husband built with a 800 gph pump.

Hello and welcome to the site! first off, unfortunately you are heavily overstocked I'm afraid. The minimum for just 2 Oscars is a 75 gallon tank with more being better. The minimum for a single Oscar is 55 gallons. Its good to see that you are properly filtered for the size tank but again when all of those fish grow up you will have well many large ciclids. As far as suggestions I will let others chime in, in the mean time make yourself at home and ask any questions you may have.

Ditto on fish statement above, all I will add is they won't stay small for long as O's can grow 1" a month with proper care. The others a bit slower. Cons will breed at about 2" and be super aggressive which is another issue you could have if you have mixed sexes.

Welcome :fro:
Filtration-wise,your looking good depending on how much media volume is in the sump....and that filtration will easily transfer as you upgrade.
Enough been said about the stocking, and also the short time before a needed upgrade (about 2-3 months),so will just say welcome and feel free to look around and make yourself at home.
Just think about it.

And if you have convicts of mixed sexes, it's important to keep in mind that water is their aphrodisiac. :lmao:

I'm guessing this is a bichir, likely the Senegal bichir (the most common in the pet trade, and the one that is generally referred to as the dinosaur eel or dinosaur bichir), which will eventually grow to about 18". If it's one of the larger varieties, however, you may eventually wind up with a fat, happy bichir while you scratch your head and wonder where your other fish went. That is, if the oscars don't outgrow it and eat it first.

Welcome aboard!
