New O owner

Postby CalebD89 » Wed Jul 27, 2011 10:12 pm

What up ppl? I just recently Purchased my first fish tank and got two O's, a pleco, and a mini catfish clear. For right now I just have a 30gal tank but my O's are only 2" right now. I am picking up a 55gal next week hoping to grow a good set of O's. One is a tiger and one is a red. I have been feeding them super soft krill pellets and freeze dried brine shrimp and they seem to like it so far. My pleco is about 5" and it gets the accational carrot treat one the O's go to sleep. The pleco is very shy too. Never comes out in the light. The mini cat fish is king of his rock castle and only comes out to clean then heads right back into his hiding spot. For now that's it. Hello to all!!!!

Welcome to the site!

Would like to start by saying great job on the upgrade to a 55Gal, because it is bigger than a 30Gal, however, we do recommend at least a 75Gal tank for 2 Oscars together, while a 90Gal is "Preferred" for two of them. Also, just an FYI incase you haven't been told yet, it is best to soak any freeze dried foods in tank water prior to feeding. This allows the dried foods to soak up the water and expands, if it is not done before feeding them to your fish, then the freeze dried foods will expand in your Os tummy and can be the cause of a number of issues.

We have tons of great information around here and very knowledgeable members, so browse around, make yourself at home and enjoy it! And by all means any question you have, feel free to throw it our way!

Welcome. Great advice you have been given already. Gratz on the new fish.

Two Oscars in the 75 gallon tank.
55 gallon planted tank with angelfish, guppies, BN plecos, betta's and ADF's.
55 gallon flat back hex with three goldfish.

Welcome aboard. Hope to see you stick around, excellent help here for learning about your fish's needs. As Blake already stated you'll want to consider a larger than 55 gal to upgrade to. And we can give you advice as to filters as well. Plecos and Oscars are high waste producing fish and will benefit from properly sized filtration and water volume, not just for their health but also to help keep it a little easier for you to maintain keeping it more enjoyable in the long run.
Any day is a good day for watching the fish swim........
