Any idea what this is on my JD?

If it's not an Oscar or Discus (as they have their own forums), but a cichlid from Texas, Central or South America... This is the place to be! Terrors and Devils and Jacks oh my!

Any idea what this is on my JD?

Postby TimP » Thu Dec 29, 2011 9:54 pm

Recently my JD developed a white bump on his lower lip. It originally went away about 90% but this week it has come back. He is completely normal as far as eating/pooping but wanted to ask a few if this is something that I should be concerned about, even to the point of quarantining? Thanks in advance!

Lymphocystis maybe? Does it look cauliflower in appearance.
if it is definitely quarantine it as it's contagious. Apparently no cure but not necessarily fatal either. I know Callen has discussed it before in the 911 section.....

It does look like the start of Lymphocystis. You want to up his immune system with foods high in Vit C. It is a virus and will just take it's course. Keep us posted and it may start looking worse before it gets better.

Most likely the other are more on the right trail for the answer but just wondering could it possible be a cut or something like that?

It could be. Just have to keep an eye on it. I know TimP keeps a pristine tank so it should heal quickly is it's not Lymphocystis because unfortunately the virus takes 4-6 weeks.

Lymphocystis,or not,it will eventually clear...so don't see a need for quaratine either way.Tank's exposed already if virus or parasite,if an injury then good water and diet will handle it.The only call for quarantine would be if the JD is stressed or starts to show signs of a secondary infection.
JMO,lymphocystis. Looks "warty" when I blow up the pic. Vitamins C and E,plus anything that'll pump up the immune system will control outbreaks.Another option is IEH (Idiopathic epidermal hyperplasia),fairly rare and much more benign than lymphocystis...the pink coloration and "bumpy" texture resemble it some.
Just think about it.

Thanks everyone, that makes me feel a little bit better knowing that my boy will be ok. :) Kinda bummed as to it most likely being a virus. Any idea how it can be contracted?

Well I do use Vita-Chem in my frozen mix as well as garlic cloves, garlic guard and usually a part of an orange. I feed this mix every night, but would that be enough Vit C?

When I first saw it, I decided to give it a couple days to go away, figuring it might be something like that. It did go away, but than it came back this week and is a little worst than it was the first time I saw it.

Since Lymphocystis is a virus, can it spread from one fish to another?

Thanks again everyone for the great info! I'll also post a pic from tonight, just to show that it has gotten larger over a days time. Also, I looked close at it and it appears to have some "hair-like" stuff growing off of the top of the "wart." ???

Yes it can spread and the other fish may get it their immune systems are weak. Keep doing what you are doing with the Vit's and keep the stress level low.

Lymphocystis is pretty much limited to "high order" fishes so the Plec is probably immune. Lymphocystis is passed on through contact with fish already carrying it or contaminated equipment or waste...it also can take from one week to over a year to show any symptoms, and early outbreaks can resemble Ich,so it can easily slip into a tank.Stress seems to bring it on quicker.

A good comparison would be "cold sore" herpes in humans. Lots get them, have stress-related outbreaks...and lots have it and never have an outbreak. Those that get them frequently often control them through diet and stress-relieving routines.
Much like being suggested for your JD.
Just think about it.

Think of Lymphocystis as like us humans having a cold sore. you have the virus and it only manifests as a sore when your run down

Yeah, that comparison makes sense. Thanks all! I'm not sure what he could be stressed about, as IMO my fish are spoiled rotten. ??? Maybe I should just pour some of my homebrew in the tank and tell them to kick back for a few. ::) I know it helps me relax.
