Gouramis and Jack Dempseys

If it's not an Oscar or Discus (as they have their own forums), but a cichlid from Texas, Central or South America... This is the place to be! Terrors and Devils and Jacks oh my!

Tank Mates: Jack Dempsey

Postby marineman4 » Sun Apr 08, 2012 5:52 pm

Okay so I have a Jack Dempsey. It is a she and I recently had a Tiger Oscar but knowing the dempsey, she ate em'! My question is that I want (I dont care if I see it) a Striped Raphael Catfish along with her. Will this work????? And any other suggestions of what to get that will get along with both of them??? :fro: thanks

it may work but youl have to make sure the raph is a size it cant be eaten , the striped raph's dont seem to be as secretive and a bit more active than the spotted type ( well ours are weve got both types )

Sounds like the oscar was considerably smaller than the JD? I'm sure there'll be more suggestions coming....it was a slow Easter weekend.

90g's a good size. What size is the JD ?
Eating an O says there was a sizeable difference,so you are going to have to stay 1/2 JD length or better to avoid a similar situation with anything else you try.
Suggestions are almost limitless...JD can be compatible with almost any fish it can't bully or eat...so it comes down to what you are interested in and how territorial the JD is.

Simplest suggestion,to me at least,is add a known male JD of similar size,3-5 fast/agile dithers, and the Raphael.Decorate with lots of rockwork/driftwood and reasonably good to go.
Just think about it.

Also will angelfish live with a JD????? It is considerably bigger but i am afraid of fin nipping. What about a Red Tailed Shark too. I used to have one and they are so amazing.

JD+BS+AF Tank Mates

Postby marineman4 » Mon Apr 09, 2012 5:45 pm

Can I have A Jack Dempsey, Bala or Red Tailed Shark, and an Angelfish living together????? Any other combos that have a Jack Dempsey you could create for me. Just realized that JDs are very territorial. So i need fish ideas. I had an oscar that was bearly smaller than the JD but the JD ate it. By the way the Jds name is Krik!!! Thanks for all your help!

I'd tend to stay away from Angelfish...just can't defend themselves properly if something came up. Far as a red Tail Shark...it's doable but bares watching. RTS get territorial as they mature so could lead to some "misunderstandings" of the fin-ripping sort.

Instead of tossing out a long list of species, just google Central American cichlids (most likely compatible species). Most Thorichthys, most Herichthys,Chuco, most Veija, most Paratheraps, some Parachromis, some Nandopsis, most Archocentrus, most Amatitlania,Tomocichla, some "Cichlasoma",some ex-"Cichlasoma,are species that will work.
Among those are Green Texas,Firemouth,Convict, and Salvin...among others.
Just think about it.
