Gouramis and Jack Dempseys

If it's not an Oscar or Discus (as they have their own forums), but a cichlid from Texas, Central or South America... This is the place to be! Terrors and Devils and Jacks oh my!

The red tail would be ok in fact I have one in with one of my O's but the Bala is a whole different story they get to be 12" so a 90 would be too small for both the Bala and an O.

If looking for a smaller cichlid, you could also consider a Green terror or also its relative, many of the Acara species. I have good experiences mixing those two.

What size is the tank?

I think an Angel could be a target for a JD more-so since your JD has already killed an O

I have merged your topics together as they are about the same thing, a JD tank mate. This will stop any confusion :fro:

Gouramis vs JDs

Postby marineman4 » Tue Apr 10, 2012 7:20 am

Okay so I have a few topics which have been merged together about JD tank mates. But the question that has had a lot of confusion is this:
Will Honey or Opaline gouramis live well with a Jack Dempsey??? ???

No, The honey Gouramis would be a bite sized snack for a jd. The Opaline Gouramis Grow to six inches so they would be okay size wise but A Jd wold be to aggressive for them.

If you know your topics are being merged together, why would you keep starting new ones? It would be appreciated if you would stick with the program and post in your existing threads. It makes following the information easier, and will actually get you better responses.

"merging this one also.....

It really depends on the JD personality. But it could work. I have a buddy who has a 90 gallon with a male JD and 3 oplaline gourami. been together for like 4+ years.
Good judgment comes from experience and a lot of that comes from bad judgment.

Opaline is just a morph of Blue which is just a morph of Three-Spot...which can be a fairly aggressive Gourami. They will back down on an aggressive cichlid though.Kissing Gourami have the size, and possible aggression,to be housed with some cichlids...and at 12+" they can be a handful for some cichlids.

IMO,if the JD is known to be aggressive...which you still haven't said what size she is,and eating a smaller fish really couldn't be considered aggressive...then you need to plan a tank mate that can handle any issues and it needs to be an appropriate size in comparison.
Just think about it.

JD eats Oscar...so Tiger Barbs ? Never out of "snack size" and reminds me of one of my Bass fishing lures.
Not a fan of Red Tailed Shark... fond memories of how aggressive my mother's was. It's a doable fish if you like them, but aggression goes up as they grow,so if the JD doesn't take it out at a small size they may reach a "happy medium".
The Raphael can take care of itself with appropriate hiding spots.
Just think about it.
