Angry JD

If it's not an Oscar or Discus (as they have their own forums), but a cichlid from Texas, Central or South America... This is the place to be! Terrors and Devils and Jacks oh my!

Angry JD

Postby SeanM » Sat Jun 23, 2012 8:35 pm

Over the past 2 day my jd has gotten pretty aggressive towards my oscar, they've been in the tank for about 2 months now and haven't had a problem with each other since now. The only thing I can think of is the past 2 days has been really hot and my tank temp has been at 82 heater hasn't been on, do u think her aggression could be from the temp rise?

From personal experience...yes,it's the temperature,or at least a big part of it.
You can cool a tank (by as much as 4F) by blowing a fan across the water surface (evaporative cooling). Might have to top-off a bit more, but it's better than the alternative (aggression) and cheaper than a chiller (by a lot).

Other methods,if you can't run a fan,are..
Get some bottled water bottles (4) and freeze them. Place two in the tank, when they thaw rotate 2 more in and put the thawed two back in the freezer.
If you run a canister or sump you can extend the return line with added hose and coil it in a cooler of ice for conductive cooling.
Either way,if you have a quality heater with thermostatic control the tank won't get to cold. The heater would kick on at its set point.
Just think about it.

So I've been using the frozen water bottle method to cool the water down and it's been keeping the water down but my jd is still real aggressive towards my Oscar. My Oscar is confined to alittle cave if he leaves the jd will come rushing over and start attacking him until he gets in his rock, she won't really let the O eat without going after him. Do u think it would be a good idea to take the jd out for alittle while maybe rearrange the rocks then put her back in?

Just wondering.. What size tank they are housed in??? Why i ask is if the tank is small (say like a 55 gallon) that could cause some agression issues too.
Good judgment comes from experience and a lot of that comes from bad judgment.

There in a 65 right now I'm getting a 125 in about 5 months. Both about 3-3.5 inches

It seems the issue here is a lack of space for territory, so the JD has pretty much claimed it all. The sooner you can get that 125 the better. As I mentioned in another thread pet-co is having their $1 per gallon sale this week so you may want to hop on that save yourself a good deal of money on the 125.

Definetly gonna take a look at that, also about a week ago I gave my convict to my friend which was in the tank with the jd and the O. The jd picked on the convict all the time and left the O alone, then I took the convict out to give to my friend and the jd started going after the O. Could it be that my jd is a bully?

Oh it certainly is a bully it's an aggressive cichlid it comes with the fish lol. But again I believe the lack of territory in the 65gal is the main culprate.

Two 3.5" fish in a 65g isn't lack of territory...yet. Go ahead and rearrange and see how it goes.

Part of the problem is that a JD is technically maturing at 3.5" (Central American's grow slow but mature sexually earlier)....an O has a way to go (it's still a baby)...so that might be a big issue with what's going on.
Just think about it.

Ditto, more so if the JD is a male

I know it's an aggressive cichlid but I've had a 6in JD that passed last year and it was housed in the 65 with 4 FMs and the jd was a sweet heart didn't bother the FMs. Guess I just got lucky and found a nice one lol

I seldom keep JD as...just my luck...every one I've owned has been "hyper-aggressive" about territory.
The word psychotic comes to mind.

Generally, though,JD aren't that bad. Make an excellent cichlid when housed appropriately.
Just think about it.

So I rearranged everything in the tank and that didn't do anything still very aggressive to the O. Luckily my friend has a 55g that currently is housing a 6in pleco and he said I could use that for the JD so I'm gonna be transporting her later today to her new tank.
