Oscar maturity

Postby MrIan1077 » Tue Aug 14, 2012 8:30 pm

I have come to conclusion after EXTENSIVE research of reading articles about oscars' age of sexual maturity.I believe it's around 2 years for some. The reason is that my one oscar has laid eggs around the 1 1/2 year mark.My other oscar hasn't laid eggs and is around the same age.I was told by everybody that you need PATIENCE when breeding oscars.I have patience now.Even when my oscar has had 3 false egg lays. One time in the future everything will come together for a successful spawn.

Just like us humans, there's no set age for breeding maturity......and there are no guarantees that against infertility either.
Hang on to that patience some more :fro:

Is the female oscar the only one out of the pair to stop eating when it's time for egg laying?

???
Never had them stop eating just to lay eggs, had them stop laying to eat though.
My guesstimate on that is it's on an individual basis female to female :-\
Just think about it.

Wasn't aware I was ever adamant about there being two female Os :-\
Hope they get spawning right soon because (noting maniacal laughter in quote) you're heading for needing medication ;)
Just think about it.

No doubt one of those individuals will vary things. My females do stop eating on the day they are laying. I notice even when they haven't started laying yet they don't bother to come eat. As for the male (and the non laying female when together) they seem to still come up to eat, unless they are actually in the middle of laying. Once eggs are layed it seems real hit and miss whether they'll leave the eggs long enough to eat.

About a week now I've been feeding my O's 3 times a day with bloodworms that has Vitamin C already in them.I have also been feeding them crickets, big mealworms {super worms},and some crayfish. The female is eating the most I have ever seen her eat.The other oscar is eating {his} regular amount but,the female is eating double of what she usually eats.I'm only doing 20% water changes every 3 to 4 days. The water is a couple degrees cooler that I'm putting back in on the water changes. The temp. in the tank is pretty much at 80 degrees. The temp. once in awhile creeps up in between 80-82ish.My heater is unplugged and just in the tank. When I vacuum the gravel they love to attack the vacuum.Especially, when I get near their slate.I keep my light on for 12 hrs. a day and I have the light so it's not bright. The {male} dug a huge pit right near the slate they've been cleaning forever. She's had around 3 or 4 false egg lays. Then again,I didn't feed her as much as I'm feeding her now. That might of contributed to not developing eggs.

Pea act as a Laxative.

Also good nutrition source:
"Peas, green, raw:
This food is very low in Saturated Fat, Cholesterol and Sodium. It is also a good source of Protein, Vitamin A, Niacin, Vitamin B6, Folate, Phosphorus and Copper, and a very good source of Dietary Fiber, Vitamin C, Vitamin K, Thiamin and Manganese.
Read More http://nutritiondata.self.com/facts/veg ... z246ib9MVX
"
That link is where I check out nutritional data on anything that goes in me...or my fish.

Also,by benefit of nutritional content, really helps color (know some "Show Pros" who swear by it).... but,as Callen noted,it's laxative effect makes it something you don't want to overfeed on.
Just think about it.
