Oscar`s 4 or more ?

Postby Katt on Fri Jul 23, 2010 12:50 am

OK have to ask...been wondering for some time now.
But would you have a better chance of 4 or more O`s getting along than two. ?

Was watching the video`s on youtube, you see 4 or more O`s swimming around look`s so peasefull...
Now I know there only short video`s so cant really go by them.
Why I ask.
Don't worry....Be happy.

I've heard something similar, and have seen large tanks with groups of oscars that get along quite peacefully. The Henry Vilas Zoo in Madison, WI, and the Phoenix Zoo here in Arizona both have large tanks with schools of oscars that seem to get along just fine. The tank at the zoo in Madison had more than a dozen oscars in it the last time I was there. Keeping a group may work like keeping one or two with a school of dithers (that's just speculation).

I think it depends on the individual personality of the fish and their sex if you had four males well who knows what would happen. Tho the size of the tank would have something to do with it as well. A really big tank would reduce the amount of aggression.

Yes make`s sense the more room the better, but I was looking at 180-200g tank`s. With 4 to 6 O`s.

Have to admit I wouldn't have wanted to keep more than the single O in my 180g, but then there were other fish in there.

I should imagine with line of sight breaking ornaments they could be kept similar to Mbuna where aggression is spread amongst the group. But it would come down to having enough space, good water conditions and a slice of luck.

Controlled overstocking maybe, similar to how some do African Cichlids :-\
Some studies have showed that wild Os try to maintain 8'-10' diameter territory with males allowing females to overlap.Maybe the numbers take away the desire to hold/defend territory.

2 Os = 1 on 1,so someonone wants it all...4,or more, would be a free for all.Just not worth the effort on their part.

It`s just I would like to have two Oscar`s that get along..
I don`t want a breeding pair, nor do I want to go thought what I did with Neko and Oden. :(

So next question ;D ( getting sick of it now huh )
What`s the chances of me finding another O that would go with Kiya ??
Should I try and add two or more around her size, and hope two will get on, then rehome the other one`s ?
Don't worry....Be happy.

Never mind the last question..

I just got a real good deal on 3 O`s, 2, are just about the same size as Kiya, the other is still a baby. :D
God help me,,, what I get myself into this time. :D I can`t just leave well enough alone can I. :buck:

So just got them in the tank, after a 80% WC, re-arranged, and took the backdrop off.
Kiya is in a bucket and will add her back in 3 hour`s or so.
Iam not planing to keep all 4 O`s,,,, I figure with 4, am bound to get two that will get along. ::) OK I hope...

The Sajica are in there own tank now, because when we got home from Denmark, there was 4 fry left.
So they need there own tank now.
Don't worry....Be happy.

Got a 280 gallon aquarium and I can only keep 2 adult Os in it. Tried several times with more but with not a good out come. Tank foot print is 5'x2.5' though.

Wonder if it`s the foot print, or the O`s just want it all. :-\
I would be happy to just have two. :)

With that statement, you got me worried. :D

Well I let Kiya over night in the bucket, because all the other time`s I`ve tryed adding O`s, I would take out mine, add new then add old O after an hour or two...
This time I hope a longer time out will work.
Going to add her after my coffee.
Don't worry....Be happy.
