oscar tank mates?

Postby kyle313 on Sun Jul 25, 2010 11:53 pm

as you all know my o is getting a new home (120gal.) and my wife was asking me if we could brighten up the tank by getting a few more fish instead of an eel that hides all day the pleco and an oscar. i guess she wants to make it more lively since the only fish that realy swims around is my o. i was thinking of smaller fish bright colored fish. i know im not going to add any right away i do want to get my o's hith under control before i add more fish if at all. i just want to have the time to way our options and see what fish are available first before just go out and buy one. like i said its all up in the air right now but it will also be good to here recomendations for the future. oh, and we for sure dont want SD or cons.

A lot will depend on your oscar's personality, but there are several other species of fish that can be kept with oscars. Here's a good place to start:
viewtopic.php?f=3&t=19994

In my tank I have two oscars, two turquoise severums, five silver dollars, and a pleco. The oscars squabble a little bit with each other (they've both recently hit puberty), though nothing serious, and they will try to chase the silver dollars and intimidate the severums from time to time. The silver dollars easily outrun the oscars, and the severums stand their ground just fine. I'm crossing my fingers that things stay the way they are as the oscars mature.

Well I'll tell ya we bought this guy a couple years ago and I had him in my community tank but he started to harass everyone in the tank. So I thought I'd give it a try. He's about three or four inches long and the O I put him in with is well fed and pretty mellow. So far all is well he's holding his own tho I guess that could change at any time but he's a pretty aggressive fish and quite fast. :)

Hi
I have a 110 gallon with 2 adult oscars, 1 common pleco and a Jack Dempsey..
I think Jack Dempsey's are pretty! They have lots of color but it takes at least 2 years for them to reach full size. ;) I find them to be calm and great fish. I have 2 of them and each one get's along great with my oscars.. They are very mellow.
But you have to make sure the Oscars are bigger then the Jack Dempsey's then it should work out. :)
Here is a picture of my JD Bubba..

i do like the blue acara and the JD's. my wife was thinking of african cichlids. i dont know if thats there real name is but the pets stores always list them as african cichlids. she likes the the bright yellow ones and blue ones. i know they dont get very big but is that something worth trying?

NO no no....African cichlids And South AM`s, should not be housed together.
1, they have different PH`s need`s.
2, they show aggression differently.
3, have different food need`s.
Stick to ether SA, or African`s. :fro:
Don't worry....Be happy.

I think you'd be fine with 2 or 3 of them. Personally I would add 2 that would leave room for something else if you decide.
