Ahh the amazing Astronotus ocellatus! You can find Help and Advice from tank-mates, to breeding, to well.. just about anything that involves keeping Oscars.
Our tank is 80 gallons and we have a baby oscar in it. I do have 4 gigantic silver dollars that are being rehomed to a larger tank on Saturday so the O will have the tank to himself. Hub has had his eye on an albino O and has been mentioning this fish practically everyday. I told him that we couldn't buy it because our tank is too small. So I'm the party pooper keeping him from what he wants for his b-day. What do you guys think? IMO, since he likes clown loaches I'd rather get 4 loaches. I'm going to print out the replies from here, bad and good and let him read it so that way he can have something to think about besides what I say.
IMO, I agree the tank is two small for both Os and I also thing it'll be too small for an adult O and 4 adult loaches when they all mature of course if you have plans to rehome them all in the future then I would say go for it.
Definitely too small a tank for two O's but if the cl's are small and you have plans to upgrade to a larger tank at some point you might be ok. On the other hand if the cl's are too small they could become a snack for the O.

Eventually too small for too adult Os. No guarantee the one he likes and one you have would be compatible either.
Not being a CL fan...can be a bit sensitive for some while others seem to have no problems whatsoever...how does he feel about catfish ? Possibly a smaller compatible cichlid ? Always some nice options there that may have never been thought of.
Oinky, there IS a catfish he's intersted in. It's pretty big though. I think he called it a 4 line catfish? An aquarium shop had one for $25.00 and it had to be at least 8 inches long with long whiskers/feelers. You think that might be an option?
Common names being what they are,the only 4-Line Catfish I'm aware of is Pimelodus blochii. If that's it it about as big as it's going to get...and $25 dollars for an adult is a steal (Juvis at 2"-3" run fairly cheap,<$10).
The perfect gift...JMO. He doesn't like it you can buy it for me Only fish Connor "plays nice" with.
You are sooooo smart! He got the catfish and it IS a Pimelodus and the owner of the store sold it to him for $15.00 since it was his birthday! Very cool fish. We went to another aquarium shop and bought some live plants, some kind of orange shrimp, and chili raspboras (for a different tank of course). I'd say he made out like a bandit for his b-day!
