Why do you love YOUR oscar?

Postby Elizabeth94 » Tue Aug 07, 2012 2:46 pm

Just curious what people think about their oscars. What makes them unique? Special? Or stand out above other species? I know people treasure their fish as if it were a cat or dog (as do I) and I'm planning on getting oscars :) I hope to see many replies. Have fun! ;D

In a word personality and that personality is different for every O. I have a bad boy who will eat you up if he gets the chance. I have a big old gentle Ben who wouldn't hurt a fly and I have one who is defiantly type a.

Love mine because he's mine. Owned his parents,so I know where he came from, what went into him,and why he has his nasty little disposition.
That and he's smarter than the Cocker Spaniel.
Just think about it.

Yep, personality.... My oldest/biggest a tiger I think may be a little schizo, she's either a total sweetheart or a total brute when she gets in the mood for it. They'll all eat out of my hand, want to "visit" when I come in the room, and they always let me know when it's dinner time....instead of just coming to the glass to say hi and see me, they start going nuts wagging their tails and going to the area of the tank I feed them at without even seeing food yet :D The only other fish I have that is as personable is my betta in the community tank.
Any day is a good day for watching the fish swim........

Exactly what Don said! They are very gentle to me when they need to be and I can get them to eat out of my hand (along with my other cichlids). They are just like puppy dogs wagging their tails as soon as I come in the room, after I get home from work. I guess they are mostly what you hear from other members. They just make you love them. In my opinion, most cichlids have this type of personality and I for one, will always have a tank devoted to them.

I don't know. I just do.

Two Oscars in the 75 gallon tank.
55 gallon planted tank with angelfish, guppies, BN plecos, betta's and ADF's.
55 gallon flat back hex with three goldfish.

I do enjoy how Lil O comes and visits me every time im near the tank, but for me its the size they can and will get. I like the fact they can get 13+ inches. I much reather have one large "wetpet" then 20 tiny fishes in a community tank :)

I agree, my community tank got boring after a while. Although the little neons were quite pretty. I'm looking forward to an intelligent, large, beautiful fish (even though my mom thinks they are ugly).

She didn't want me to get the 75gal because we have two dogs and my ball python. She fell in love with my angelfish tho and even named him! Once the tank is cycled, she'll be all over my new oscar

i think they're ugly too, but i wouldnt swap my O for anything. My mum said it has a face only a mother would love haha, But i perfer my O over any other, deformatiess and all, i quite like the stubbed nose look. and yes as everyone that owns one agrees they have a HUGE personality, my O 'wags' its tail as soon as i come into sight, it always wants to get fed, give me hints all the time, and quite gentle when i hand feed it. your O tank will become quite the center of any room, mine has.

My Dp shows quite some personality that O's have ---->>
My fish have taken over my heart, and my whole house!
About a Lionfish:
Paul: As long as you don't touch it. Nathan, have anything to say? :buck:
FallenMessiah: I'll wear a gauntlet when cleaning the tank ;)
Blake: Lmao just bring the whole suit of armor in, but make sure you take TONS of pictures and maybe a video for our viewing pleasure! I can see it now, someone doing tank maintenance in a suit of armor.

It's great to hear that people grow so attached to them :) i am attached to my angelfish as he act similar to your O, always begging for food when i come near the tank, he even swims across the whole 4 foot length of the tank!.. and of course i have to give him some food ::) Im soo excited to get one! my mom will warm up to him and ill probably find her sneaking him food  shes kind of mad as i kinda moved the 75gal in the house when she was gone. (she doesnt like to admit she likes it, but sometimes it slips out of he mouth) :fro:

Yup, I play with my O, I stand one end and it'll hover then swim to the feeding end, if I don't move O will come back hover again the. Swim back to the feeding end again. Then sometime I dash to the other side of the tank to see how fast it can get to the feeding end lol they will recognize you as soon as you come in sight, no doubt your angel fish do as well, my betta does. He's just gotten used to me again as my friend baby sat him for a month, after a couple of days he's warmed up to me again. O knew I was back instantly and was after food. ;D

I love Fury because she is so dern smart. I have her trained to the food hoop, and sometimes I mess with her and hide it in the tank, and she always finds it and then swims around with it in her mouth begging for food.

I love her because she has an extreme temper just like me. :goof:
