ive come away from bio balls(nitrate factory),
seachem matrix/Pond matrix , huge surface area. apparently removes nitates..

? 1 ltr of matrix per 100gal
mine are deffinatly lower. introduced the matrix, removed a handfull of bio balls weekly over 5 weeks.
http://www.google.co.uk/#q=seachem+pond ... 24&bih=643no restriction to flow either.
hope this helps

I sure did.

I decided to go with a 5 gallon bucket of 1" Coralife
Bio Balls. I bought them from Foster and Smith for $49.99 with free shipping. I had to put in a decent sized order anyways, so I just added to it. The only thing I have to do now is to decide on my return pump. I'll be creating a DIY thread of my sump filter complete with build cost and bill of materials as soon as I drill the glass lids and attach bulkheads.

I wish I would've seen this not long ago, the aquarium store that closed behind my old job (where we snagged the 70Gal Corner from) had about 10gallons of bio balls just thrown out in the grass, I didn't think about it at the time, but I could've snagged them also and shipped them to you for just the cost of shipping

kicking myself now lol

I was more in the "Grab what I can as quickly as possible before someone stops and confronts us" mode lol Trust me I thought about grabbing them, but they were oddly spread enough apart where it would have taken a good long while to grab them all
