I have recently bought a silver stand and tank setup,, but I like that finish, If I manage to coax the wife into allowing a second bigger tank, Then yes I will build my own stand and do that finish.

Wish I had built my own then,,would have been cheaper and a better stand

I am going to add a bit to this thread, since it be silly to start a whole new one on basically the same design.   Only real difference from HD's and mine (besides my being for a 125 instead of a 180) is we used 2x6 for the top platform and outside leg supports simply because we had 2x6 left over from doing the addition the tank is located in.   We also used 5/8 plywood for the top and will be placing door moulding around the bottom to match the canopy.   Also as you can see mine is also basically built into the subfloor (no bottom) so unlike HD's, there is no moving this one :P

Thanks to my buddy Al for all his help on this project.  Without him, it would have not been possible 8)

I am planning on trying this stand as i want a new tank and the stand and hood cost nearly twice as much as the tank.

Are you planing on adding a DIY for making the hood ?

Wow, nice job on the stand. I'm wanting to give it a try (one day) lol. May I ask how much was spent total on materials?

If I remember right, it was less than $200 for everything. I will be posting sometime in the near future the canopy.

HD, Great show :fro:

I use to build kitchen/bathroom cabinets for a prominent manufacturer, who I will leave the name off. This is by far better. They would have charged thousands of dollars for the same thing you made. The only difference is more than 99% of the cabinents, the only solid wood was the frame, doors, and drawer fronts; the rest was particle board (sides, backs, drawer parts). The deluxe cabinets cost extra, so you got real wood sides to the drawers and a bit stronger bottom to the drawers, and the back was the same material as the drawer bottom. Extremely cheap materials, not a frugal price.

You have inspired me to take on this project in time. I still have some cherry doors from that place I may be able to work the openings to fit them ;)

I was thinking, if you add dynamat to the inside of the cabinent ... it could almost eliminate any noise from the canisters and air pumps. It works well for making cars quieter.

Callen, good job on the fancy artwork. It almost looks like pearl insets in the pictures ... you know, like those fancy black and pearl/opal Japanese sets.

You two could start a business making cabinets and canopies for OSpot members :D If I was limited to a choice of paying $500 for ones commercially available, or near the same for yours, I think I know which one to get 8) (Shipping may be ridiculous for something like that though :()

Hmm ... looks like I need to get off my bum and get to it soon :P Think I will wait to see the canopy write up first and tackle the project(s) all at once :) (Always an excuse for procrastination!)

Thanks man. Still looking for my canopy design. I have a electronic copy somewhere, but not sure where I put it. As soon as I find it, I will start posting.

Did you use mdf for the actual exposed platform that the tank sits on? I'm doing something similar and my friend said that when mdf gets wet it swells up. Thanks.
