flu val issues yet again

Postby befries » Mon Jul 09, 2012 12:34 pm

So for the past 2 months or so I've notice less and less flo
So bout an hour ago i did new filters/media so fourth cause i was getting alot of debris flowing out the spout
Put it all back together clean and fired it back up got it worse
So obviously its the intake out put lines any special way to get to the crap that's blocking flow?
I've done dumping water down its throat got alot but still not all.
Let me know

best way is to disconnect the tubes. Get a wire snake brush (ya know those brushes that are a long wire with bristles on the end) use that to loosen up the debris and then use a garden house to really rinse it out well. worked well for me im sure others used similar methods.

Hopefully you didn't really replace all the media in there.....or have another filter running on that tank to keep it cycled.
But yes, you can get long brushes to clean the inside of the tubes, might be just a piece of stiff wire with a small brush on the end which works great too. If you can't find that, use a hanger/piece of stiff wire to push/pull a small piece of rag (works best making a hook on the end to pull the rag through. Of course the longer the hose the more difficult it is.

I figured I would have to do something along those lines
And I do have another pump running on this tank so no big worries there.

Cool, just watch your water readings for the next few days. Your filters become balanced to bio load and removing the beneficial bacteria contained in one of the filters may create a spike in ammonia until that filter becomes established again.

Part of maintaining you filters is rinsing the media in clean tank water, or dechlorinated water on a regular basis (every month or so, depending on how quickly your flow rate starts to drop). Ceramic noodles, lava rocks, BioChem Stars, etc. can be placed in a bucket of clean tank or dechlorinated water and agitated to remove debris. Sponges should be dunked in the water and shaken and squeezed. Most of the sponges will last indefinitely with regular maintenance, and you'll get a lot more life out of your other media that way.

Old thread, but I have a sure-fire way easy way to clean the pipes on all canisters. Reccommended to me by customer service(Penn-Plax, the makers of the Cascade series).

Okay, you got the disconnected tubes in your hand. Take one and put a handful of gravel in it and a quarter cup of vinegar. Put a thumb on each end and shake like crazy. Boom. Done. Rinse well. Repeat on the other hose.

If you are still having flow issues, look to the impeller.
