I need a babysitter

Postby FallenMessiah » Fri Jun 01, 2012 8:19 am

I'm going to the states for a month on the 26th June and need someone with experience to look after my adult O and my Betta, O And Betta will come with a complete set up in a spare 3 foot tank, food, finger heater, everything, no expense whatsoever. Mum won't clean them while I'm away and bro may be in the midst of moving house. So if bro falls thru I need someone else to look after them..
My fish have taken over my heart, and my whole house!

Blake: Lmao just bring the whole suit of armor in, but make sure you take TONS of pictures and maybe a video for our viewing pleasure! I can see it now, someone doing tank maintenance in a suit of armor.

You're talking about relocating a tank to someone for the month?

The question is more how long will you be gone. A mature tank with adequate filtration will be fine unattended for 21 days.
Only concern mighy be "topping off" due to evaporation, but feeding and water changes will be okay "on hold"
Just think about it.

Just feed a lot less. Use little snack baggies for food and date them when they should use them. We went away for 14 days with no water changes, feed less and everything was great...we didn't have time to do a water change and if I remember right we waited another week before we got to it. Not recommended practice but it is ok once in a while.

Im going away for a whole month, perhaps relocating not the best idea but i have no idea what to do when going away more then one night away, so moving them came to mind.

O gets fed everyday basically, but i can back it off a bit to a couple times a week, the 5 foot has a ehiem 2217 canister, with proper sponges in it since January. planning to do a huge water change a day before, and teach mum to know when to stop giving it pellets when it start hording them in its mouth

He's old enough now that everyday really isn't a necessiity and he'll be fine while your away with the 2-3X weekly feeding.
As Callen mentioned earlier, you can put portions in little baggies so there's no waste and little worry about water quality.
Im going away for a whole month....planning to do a huge water change a day before

Doing a large water change at the last convenient moment will help greatly but don't feed right after doing it. If you will have someone to feed occasionaly start the schedule right then,if not then feed well the day before the water change.

My old job always involved being away 14-21 days (sometimes 6 weeks). No problems using those routines,as Melissa refused to do water changes too...and sometimes forgot their feeding schedule (2X weekly).

One last suggestion. If your lights aren't already on a timer, put them on one (or just leave them off). With no water changes the nitrates will slowly build (faster if being fed) and algae can really take off with excess "light time".
Just think about it.

Agree, better to leave them as is with a trimmed down feeding schedule, tank cleaned before leaving and after getting back. Feeding less while you're gone won't harm them at all and will help keep from such bad effects of the extra time without a water change.

Agree with all of the above, I've been away for 3 weeks before and just fed them before i left, did a big W/C at the last minute.
then just do another big change as soon as you get back and give them a good feed. A month is a bit longer so if you can get someone to feed them even once a week would be good.

Yup. Cut down Os feeding, you should see the looks I'm getting haha, keeps swimming to his feeding side giving rather huge hints lol gotta train mum when to stop giving him pellets when he hoards them in his mouth. Still dunno if Betta is going to bro or Lauren, my noob fish friend, so far she's has success with her goldies.
