Best high quality pellet

Postby SeanM » Sat Jun 09, 2012 10:30 pm

Hey I was wondering what the best high quality cichlid pellet there is? I use hikari staple and a tetra brand and my guys don't really eat the hikari, I was wondering if there was any better food I can use for growth and color?

I used hikari cichlid staple(occasionally alternating between the red and green when I noticed he was getting bored of one or the other) and hikari bio gold+

Any pellet with high quality, varied, ingredients will work. Won't push a brand (I use a few different ones mixing it up) as most use the exact same ingredients just in different proportions. I simply follow one rule...avoiding ethoxyquin, unnecessary fillers, and dyes, as ingredients.
When it becomes a question of complete nutrition,I recommend mixing it up and "home-made".
Just think about it.

As OinKY has said, Home made is always the best from FRESH ingredients.

General rule of thumb with pellets, you go what you pay for.

Personally I feed pellets in the am and my homemade in the pm. As far as the brand I use it is Hikari Cichlid Bio-Gold. The only thing that I don't like about it is that is uses fish meal as an ingredient instead of whole fish. Other than that I do like and so do my fishes.

Big fat ditto from me. The only issue I have had with Omega One is that I have never found a lfs that sells the large pellets. I have always had to order them online. The ingredients list on the package is very short, mostly whole fish (no fillers, no fish meal).

I don't use Omega One.Personal reasons:
Ingredients:
Whole Salmon, Whole Herring, Whole Shrimp, Wheat Flour, Wheat Gluten, Fresh Kelp, Lecithin, Astaxanthin, L-Ascorbyl-2-Phosphate (Source of Vitamin C), Natural and Artificial Colors, Vitamin A Acetate, Vitamin D3 Supplement, Vitamin E Supplement, Vitamin B12 Supplement, Riboflavin, Niacin, Pantothenic Acid, Folic Acid, Biotin, Inositol, Tocopherol (Preservative), Ethoxyquin (Preservative) .

If Ethoxyquin doesn't bother you it is a very impressive ingredient list and pretty much unequaled by any other prepared food. Far as artificial colors it's hard to get away from that in any prepared food although I'm sure the fish don't care what color it is.
Just think about it.

the way i see it, no matter how good your fish fish is/are, it always boil down to good water. having good water coupled
with varied foods will always give you good result. i do not use any of those expensive hikari product but my fish i
believe is not very far from any one's fish here... an 11 lbs hikari gold will cost here around P5,000.00 and it is good for
30 days among my fish... however, the food locally available here will cost me P 250.00 for the same period of 30 days:
a journey to a thousand miles always start with a single step,
all you have to do is move forward, aim, and respect the pathways
of others along the way.

Wow, that is a huge difference Paul! Personally I would want to support the local businesses as well. Not to mention, that should make the fish food that much fresher. And yes, you do have some very nice looking fish! :)
