pH usually doesn't contribute to HITH....but ammonia does, and ammonia affects pH.Do an ammonia/nitrite check and get back with the readings.
Just think about it.

hi Joe
any chance of posting pics as it would help to see if they are healthy pits or hith type pits
your testing for ph  do you test for ammonia , nitrite and nitrates  if you do whats the readings
i think 20% water changes every 2 weeks is not  enough it should be nearer 30-50% per week
ph isnt to bad so long as its stable
hope that helps

I agree with Alan, 20% is not enough, poor water and poor diet are the main reasons for HITH

6.0 pH for O's and JD's is really not that low.  It fits in there normal range.

Joe welcome to the site!  Glad you found us and hope we can help you.

What is the PH out of your tap water?  If it is normally 6.0 and stable then you should be ok.  Stability is the key when it comes to PH.

As far a HITH yes upping the water changes will help.  We had a 180 gal with 2 O's and assorted fish and would do 60-80% water changes weekly.  We would clean the gunk of the filters in some tank water we but in a bucket and rinse them.

Can you please give us some reading on ammonia, nitrites and nitrates?  If these tests are high that would be why your O's have HITH.  But to be sure pictures would help a great deal.

What are you feeding?

Sorry for all the questions but the more we know the better we can help.  Hang in there and we are happy to help you to have happy and healthy O's.
Choose your thoughts carefully .. you are a masterpiece of your life.
