HELP! fungus on fish!

Postby Riles » Sat Mar 19, 2011 9:38 pm

Hey everyone, i need some help. I tested my water today and all is well but i have lost 5 neons, a swordie, a rainbow and a phantom glass catfish in the last week. The swordie's skin was colourless, like all pigment had rotted away. I've researched it and it looks like Costia or Chilodonella. I've forgotten what specifics i need to post up but my tank is 85g.

Please help!!

Of your two self-diagnosis,you'd look mainly at the symptoms. Which do they show more?

Chilodonella: parasitic
Labored breathing, and fish may appear at surface gasping for air. Fish will evidence lethargy, and may, from time to time, try to "scratch" off the organisms by rubbing against objecys in the aquarium. Distress is visibly obvious.

Costia:parasitic
Has more or less only one symptom, it causes the skin of the infected fish to become cloudy and milky.

With what you have given (symptoms),I'd also ask...
Do affected fish seem to move away from other fish?...and did mortalities start with the Neons?...and did deceased fish show any deformities at death?
Just think about it.

Tank Size:5foot by 18 by 18- 85g
How long has it been setup: since end of January
How many fish: before deaths (28) after (20
Type of fish: Bristlenoses, bumblebee gobies, swordies, a molly, phantom glass cats, neon tetras, rainbows, a ram keyhole, albino and spotted corys.
Size of fish: BN's around 10cm rest between 5 and 1 cm
Filtration: 250gph Gebo canister
Ammonia Reading: 0
Nitrite Reading:0
Nitrate Reading: 30
PH Reading: 7.6
Temperature: 27 before 30 now
Any recent changes in tank decor or tank mates: all fish have been gradually added from two stores over the past 6 weeks. No new decor or fish in the last week and a half except for a few BN babies and 2 BB gobys, and a small piece of Dwood. 1 thing, many of my BN babies died the other day and they may have had the fungus when i put them into the big tank 2 days ago..
Any medication: no
Food what kind how often: hikari pellets daily or every 2nd day and bloodworms once a week. Algae wafers every 2nd or 3rd day and zucchini every week.
When was last water change and how much: last weekend 60%

Oinky i think it is more like Costia..

i think it is more like Costia..

Which explains why you raised the heat a bit.

Important to know behavior of fish before they perished though too.If they simply get milky and die, then Costia may be the most logical assumption... but also need to know if there were other behaviors before they showed cloudiness.Like restlessness,or being lethargic. Best to look at that before saying Costia.
Nitrates a bit high, and some of those species are sensitive (not so much Swords),so possibly stressing them enough to contract an infection.
Just think about it.

i should've picked this up earlier but they were very lethargic and always hiding. However they were all feeding well.
