my makita is compact enough to work on the sides with room to spare, so I will just have to have a practice on some old panes of glass before I try it out. Maybe tape a string level on top of the drill too so I can keep it level. Still have to join MASA, so organizing the cutting bit will have to wait :P

Just needs vinegar. There is no scummy stuff in it, only calcium carbonate deposits.

It looks like died off coraline. Just wet it and use a scraper. I had to do it on 2 180 gal tanks and that is all I used. If you don't get it all off don't worry because coraline will grow over it.
