Eheim Professional 3(2075) and Professional 2(2028) Review

Postby TimP » Fri Sep 23, 2011 7:07 pm

I'll start by explaining this dual product review. About 6 or 7 years ago I chumped up the money and bought my first Eheim filter (2028). I shortly fell in love with it. Its functionality, ease of use as well as overall performance. Before this filter I used a Fluval Canister of similar size, sorry I don't remember the model. Anyways from the minute you open the box, you realize you just bought a fine piece of German machinery, with great attention to detail and quality. Over the years I never had a problem with this filter, the only thing I had to replace on it was the main top gasket. This was due to the fact that I never lubed it ever in all the years that I ran it. Oops.

Now, earlier this year I decided that I wanted to upgrade to the Professional III series (2075) which had some slightly different features as well as a little bit more flow. I found the primer to work much better and easier on the Professional III series. The primer on the 2075 is much smaller and primed very smoothly, where as the primer on the 2028 was quite large and took a bit more force to press in order to purge the air from the system. This isn't much of a big deal as whenever you remove and clean the filters internals, the inlet and outlet lines don't loose their prime due to the shut-off and dis-connect valve. Other than that the internal trays and media is more or less the same. Other then the above mentioned, I also liked the much larger (4) locking clips on the Professional III vs the smaller 4 on the Professional II. Not that I ever had a problem with either one, I just like the Pro III Clips better due to the increased strength and they are even more ergonomic as well. I liked this filter so much that I bought a second one to run on my 125 gallon tank.

In summery, I will always consider an Eheim for any of my tanks. The thing I love about this company is that they use the same quality standards and attention to detail in all of the equipment that they manufacture. If you decide to try one I'm sure that you'll feel the same way.

Just an FYI on my older 2028, I still have it, I am just waiting for my new primer O-ring to come in, so that I can repair the filter which I plan to re-purpose at a later time.

Well that's my 2 cents, hopefully this helps someone out in their choice and feel free to ask me any further questions on either of these.

nice write up TimP, that is how a satisfied costumer should feel about any product whom satisfaction is met.
i just hope Eheim can read this article. you deserved a discount or free unit in promoting such a good product.

one thing i had notice, you missed to indicate the cost. it will be a good info in comparing whatever other hobbyist
had. cost, performance, after sales service, etc. in some instances, someone got a good product but whenever
had problem like broken parts, nowhere to buy replacement...and that is a turn-off feature... ;D ;D ;D

all you have to do is move forward, aim, and respect the pathways

2x thumbs up on the 2028. I've had it for about 5 years and just recently replaced both o-rings. This filter is super quiet and reliable. Noise wise, I would say it is 2x more silent than my xp3. So worth the extra money.

Thanks Paul and good point. The cost for each filter was about $250, which came with everything needed including media. One thing I forgot to mention is that I did have an issue with one of the 2075's leaking from the powerhead, which was under warranty(3 years). I called them up, spoke with the gentleman who told me there was an issue with the earlier ones and he would ship me one right away. He also asked the serial number for my other 2075, which he verified it already had the correction made. I can't remember what the problem was that he told me, but he did get me a new one in like 2 or 3 days. On top of that he even e-mailed me some tech info on my 2028, to help get it working again. So, in conclusion, I could not have been happier with the way they stand behind their products! In my opinion, that is what can make or break a company, regardless of the product that they sell.

Also, if you think that the 2028 is quiet, the newer 2075 is even quieter then that, with better performance.

Nice review Tim, I have heard many many good things about Eheim, just too pricey for me lol if I am spending $250 I am building a 55Gal sump or getting an FX5 (until I have tried it that is).

Odd that you say this as I have never heard anyone ever say that their XP3 was loud. I have an XP3 and an XP2 and I don't ever hear a noise out of either, it is literally a silent operating system. For me to even hear a sound period I have to put my ear to the plastic casing and then I finally hear water flow, but never operating sounds. What kind of sounds are you hearing, now you have me worried that mine will start making noise lol

yeah, if your xp is making noise, something isn't right. I have 6 running in the same room and I can't hear a thing. Another one in my office room and again can't hear a thing.

I was just saying that the 2028 is "super" quiet. The XP3 has a sound like a refrigerator. Not saying its loud, but you can hear the difference.

Hmm, still odd. I can't honestly say I've heard anything like that...

My xp4 is noisy. I irritates me, I cannot make it quite again.

I think this filter is very well put together and is easy to clean, unlike the fluval 305 405's. You can buy this filter on VetDepot.com for $209.60 USD other sites want $80 or more dollars more.. My pick is the Eheim 2075.
