painted backgrounds

Postby MrIan1077 » Fri May 04, 2012 9:14 am

I'm thinking about painting the back of my tank.I think that I would like the painted background better than the scenery one.Does anyone have any suggestions on this subject? On what paint to use....spray paint or paint in a can.....
How to apply the paint....with a roller or brush .....
And if anyone has pictures of there tanks with the back painted more or less the finished product.I appreciate any advice on this.Thank You.

There should be some info in the DIY section, including types of paint that were used.
Any day is a good day for watching the fish swim........

All of mine are painted. I used Painters choice by Rustoleum and either brushed or rolled it on. Worked great, you do however need several coats for it to cover completely.

Thank you.I'm getting bored with the scenery that I taped on the back of my tank.Does the painted background give your tank more depth?

I've always just used Krylon spray paint, but only on empty tanks. One can does the back of a 55 gallon tank just fine, and it holds up fine, even with saltwater tanks. If the tank is not empty, you will definitely need to brush or roll it on.

Any paint that doesn't have a high volatile content (fumes) will work fine. Just as stated by everyone else...roll/brush on stocked tanks, spray on empty tanks.

If you have an area that won't see contact on the back of the tank, you can even lay an empty tank down flat and use latex (let it dry fully)...it'll peel off when you tire of it.
Just think about it.

if you have a look in my signature you will see that my background is painted black. I think it looks a lot cleaner.

I don't think it actually adds depth to the tank but it sure does look better and hides all the equipment hanging on the back. Not as easy to change as a taped on background if you get tired of it. On most of my tanks I used Navy Blue but one was done with Black and I prefer the black. Brushed on latex can be done without moving the tank. Spray paint needs to be done outside. I did a 125 that was all set up used a small diameter roller with a long handle it was pretty easy to do.
