Midge flies

Postby aslam14.85 » Thu Jul 05, 2012 10:34 am

Hi everyone.

I noticed about a n hour ago that my indoor pond had "mosquito" like insects hovering just about the water. There were quite a few of them. Upon closer inspection, i can bet my bottom dollar than they are midge and not mosquitoes...question is, are they dangerous? (My sisters toddler is living with us). Also, how do i get rid of them?

Midges themselves are basically harmless. Some species adults don't even have mouth parts. Not at all like their cousins, the mosquitoes.
I get the occasional midge hatch (live very rural between two creeks near a major river),I just ignore them...their larvae actually benefit the tanks. They are detritus feeders for the most part, living down in the substrate, and when they emerge they are free snacks.Os (also most cichlids, catfish, and loaches) will grub them out once they discover they are there.

If you've ever fed live bloodworms (midge larvae) it's not unusual to get the occasional adult midge in the house.

Moved to General Aquaria. Not a 911 situation.
Just think about it.
