My Oscar is constipated and won't eat peas

Postby b_girl » Mon Mar 23, 2009 12:36 pm

Hey,

So, we've had Oscars for a few years now and are slowly learning all their quirks and what-not. Recently one of our little guys (named Bubbles) has developed a bulge around his anus and I found on this forum that bulge means he's constipated - thinking about it now, I haven't seen him go in quite a long time. All the other fish in the tank appear to be fine. So, I also read on here that a good solution to the problem is to feed him peas (we actually didn't know until recently that they should have any vegetables in their diet). So I got some yesterday, put them in the tank and all the fish, including Bubbles, would put them in their mouth then immediately spit them out. We can't figure out how to get them to eat the peas!

Does anyone have any suggestions? We have tried other vegetables as well and haven't had any luck with them either. We have lost 2 Oscars in the past and don't want to lose any more!

you could try some of the recipes in this link to fool them into eating veggies i have to do that with my O
viewtopic.php?f=3&t=13487
some of these recipes make a lot of food but you can 1/2 or even 1/4 the ammounts to suit
the other thing you could use is epsom salts at a dose of 1 table spoon per 10 gallons to act as a laxative :fro:

Definitely the Epsom salts...it's not a like other mineral salts, and won't harm anything in the tank at that dose :fro:
Alan's got you covered on food ideas....so,I'll just say...
Welcome!
Just think about it.

Hi b_girl Image to the site.

I'd try the recipes as Alan has suggested. Also the epsom salts acts as a laxative so that may do the trick.

Please keep us posted :)

Alright, thanks! I'll check out those recipies... I want my little guys healthy! Goodness knows they love to eat (they get so excited when we're about to feed them that they do jumps)

If we were to add Epsom salt... will that cause issues for any of the other fish in the tank? Aside from the Oscars, we have a crayfish, 1 raphael catfish, 1 pleco, and 1 fish that is an african cichlid of some sort (but still not 100% sure on actual species)... As long as the Epsom salt won't harm anybody else, maybe we'll go that route.

Either way though, we need to work more veggies into their diet, especially now that we know they need it!

Epsom salts won't hurt the other fish...just make them all poop well ;)

Once your guys is back to normal then you can concentrate on getting him and the other fish on some more veggies. You will have to be stubborn and not feed them for a few days so they are nice an hungry when you do feed them veggies. Depending on how stubborn you O is this may take a little bit.

Epsom salts will not harm any other fish, just turn them into poop machines ;D

If you starve them for a few days they will be fine and hungry and hopefully devour the peas, might be an idea not to feed just now anyway with the O being compacted :fro:

Thanks for the warm welcome :)

So I've still been unsuccessful in getting them to eat peas... but managed to get them to eat some grapes last night, would that help them at all? I had to peel the grapes and then cut them up into tiny pieces, and for the most part all of them ate it. I tried red peppers with no luck, and the only one who seems to actually like lettuce is our little african cichlid who isn't having a compaction issue anyway.

I think I may need to invest in some Epsom salts :)

That's great news then!! I'll keep feeding them grapes and work on getting them to eat vegetables a little later, I think they need baby steps - time to get used to meals that don't consist entirely of meat or pellets!
